Google discovers that iPhone are now very vulnerable to hackers

The team belonging to the Google Zero Project, constantly seeks to make improvements to make the platform system as safe as it is efficient.  This time, the company has had a run in finding possible vulnerabilities in iOS devices.

Recent collaborations from Google and Apple

First, researcher Natalie Silvanovich discovered that the iPhone messaging platform, iMessage, had a bug that allowed third parties to extract messages, images and locations from those who used the device.  For this opportunity, Google notified Apple and gave it 90 days to solve the problem before making it public.  The company was up to the situation and released within that period the version of iOS 12.4 with the corresponding security patches.

Now, in February of this year the situation was repeated again with a series of hacked pages that were attacking the iPhone.  For this opportunity, Google only gave the company 7 days of action time to activate its defenses.  Again, this was the size and released the iOS 12.1.4 version on February 7.

As we have said, in recent years companies have been working side by side to guarantee the quality of both services.  Currently, months after this problem has been resolved, Google has finally released a full report explaining the causes and consequences of the last security breach.

Why did Apple not report the errors from the beginning?

This is a question that surely comes to our mind the first time we hear about the situation.  However, the truth is that these actions were the company's way of not worsening a security problem.

In fact, on Apple's official website, in the support section, there is a section that refers to software security situations.  In it, they explain categorically that the company will refrain from making any comments about problems with the defense of the operating system.  All this, until these are not only solved, but have been thoroughly investigated.

They also invite all their users to always update their devices immediately when a new version of iOS is released.  All this because in these usually come the corresponding patches to solve any problem or bug that was detected in the previous version.

The Zero Project report details all the causes of the security breach in iOS

For this case, it was up to Google Project Zero to do the relevant research after the Apple patch was released.  Specifically, the researcher that was left out of this research and data analysis for months was Ian Beer.

Finally, on August 29 of this year, the results were published on the Project Zero blog.  Basically, they discovered 5 different chains that were used to inflict evil programs on iOS devices.

They also managed to notice that there was no discrimination regarding the type of users they attacked.  In fact, just entering the hacked link immediately put any device that did so at risk.

In the event that the infiltration process was carried out efficiently, the hacker could install a tracking program that allowed him to know all the information that the user had on his iPhone.  As a general recommendation, in addition to keeping the phone's operating system updated, Google also advises users to be aware of the websites they visit and avoid pages or links that may be suspicious or unreliable at all costs.
