Apple develops fingerprint recognition under the screen.

Bloomberg: Apple develops fingerprint recognition under the screen.

Bloomberg quoted sources as saying that Apple is developing on-screen fingerprinting technology for next year's iPhone, and Apple and its overseas suppliers are testing it, although the launch time may be delayed until 2021 on the new iPhone.

The screen fingerprint reader has become the standard equipment for Android this year. The latest flagships of Samsung, Huawei, Oppo and Xiaomi are all equipped with this technology.  Its charm is to eliminate the need to retain any border around the display, but retain the biometric function on the front of the device.

According to people familiar with the matter, Apple's under-screen fingerprint recognition will coexist with the existing Face ID system.  If the test is successful, Apple is considering adopting this identifier in the 2020 iPhone model.  It is understood that the supplier has proved capable of integrating this technology into the iPhone, but Apple has not yet succeeded in mass production.

Apple imported fingerprint recognition for the iPhone in 2013 and integrated it into the Home button.  The Touch ID system with this technology can be used to unlock devices, approve payments, and allow downloads of apps, giving Apple a technological edge in speed and reliability.  When Apple introduced the iPhone X in 2017, it was replaced by Face ID with face recognition technology, which allowed Apple to once again lead in the competition with rivals.

In addition, according to sources, Apple is also working on launching the first affordable iPhone since the iPhone SE, which may be launched in the first half of next year.  The phone will look like the iPhone 8, with a 4.7-inch screen, and will use the Touch ID via the Home button instead of the screen recognition technology.
