Qualcomm Samsung cooperates to lead 5G mobile phones into the mass market
Qualcomm Inc. today vowed to introduce handsets using 5G modem chips to the mass market, and said it will launch a mid-priced handset with Qualcomm chips next year.
Samsung Electronics' five mobile phones, including the $1,299 Galaxy S10 5G and the $2,000 new folding mobile phone Galaxy Fold, are equipped with Qualcomm's 5G chipset, the world's largest mobile phone chip supplier.
Samsung's low-cost A90 5G mobile phone, the world's largest smartphone manufacturer, also uses Qualcomm chips. The previous version used Samsung chips.
Qualcomm President Cristiano Amon told Reuters at the Consumer Electronics Show (IFA) in Berlin, Germany: "The transition to 5G will be shorter than the previous transition period. Now we must bring it to everyone."
From the United States to Europe and China, more than 20 telecom operators and more than 20 mobile phone manufacturers have launched 5G services and mobile phones. Emmon estimates that 2.2 billion mobile phone users will upgrade their phones.
Qualcomm’s optimism contrasts with the challenges facing China’s second-largest mobile phone maker, China’s Huawei.
Yu Chengdong, CEO of Huawei's consumer business, praised the Kirin 990 as the "most powerful" chipset at the Consumer Electronics Show in Berlin, even better than Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 series.
Because of the US trade sanctions, Huawei's new generation 5G mobile phone Mate 30 series, which is expected to be released on September 19, may face difficulties because the phone will not be able to carry Google's Android operating system and App service.
